Pinata by Leopoldo Gout review

A poet decides to write a horror novel... At first, you might think it's a setup to a joke. But I can assure you that Leopoldo Gout is, indeed, a poet but Pinata is absolutely no joke!

Although this book will not be releasing until next year, there's a very good reason why you should pre-order it right now. The reason is because it's that damn good and I'd hate for you to forget about it in the shuffle of book releases.

This is a story of possession but not the kind you're typically used to reading. There isn't a vial of holy water in sight and, even though a priest is a character, there's not a whole lot of traditional exorcism lore to be found.

A mother takes a job in Mexico. She's spent part of her life here before moving to the States and having two daughters. But this is her offsprings first time exploring their heritage. Her youngest daughter takes to it with gusto and fits right in immediately. She's curious, outgoing, and always learning and exploring this culture. The older daughter is none to happy at being uprooted and her attitude reflects her displeasure.

However, this family unit is tight. Even though tensions arise, they love each other despite their generational gaps and attitudes.

When a local woman with a gift of "sight" sees the youngest daughter is in danger from an ancient, evil, and dangerous supernatural creature, she tries to warn the mother. This does not go well.

Due to an accident, the family is forced back home. But something has come back with them and they may never be the same again.

That's as much as I want to say about the plot. You have to read for yourself how these elements all come together because that's part of the experience of reading this book.

The author definitely writes like a poet, his prose flows in a strangely beautiful manner, and he knows how to turn a phrase that makes even the mundane details sing out from the page.

But make no mistake... this is a damn scary horror book. This creature is from Mexican/Aztec lore and there are certain rules and procedures that must be followed to rid it from this world and stop it from using this little girl as a portal. As I've stated, it's different from your typical possession tale but also unique and wholly engaging.

I highly encourage you to pre-order a copy of Pinata at this link.
