Sometimes horror books, no matter how good, get lost in the shuffle. With so many being released every month, indie authors sometimes struggle to get eyes on their hard work.
Such is the case with The Shadow After Sunset. This is an amazing horror novel that, in my opinion, is far too underrated. And that's a shame. This book seamlessly combines family dysfunction, supernatural terror, and a couple of tightly wound twists at the end.
A man and wife are having issues in their marriage. We'll find out what those issues are later but they've broken down communications between them, making them both stressed out and tired. One day, the husband picks up a beautiful homemade wooden mask at a yard sale that happens to have some strange symbols and words carved into it.
His wife is into anthropology and he thinks she'll love it. She pretends to like it but, deep down, she thinks it's just a piece of tourist replica as the symbols mean nothing to her.
But, of course, there's an evil presence that lives in the mask and it takes little time in making its terrifying agenda felt. A shadow starts appearing to them. At first, it just stares at them. But as it feeds off of their negative emotions, it grows and becomes more and more physical and hundreds of times more frightening.
They have to find a way to figure out what this creature is and how to rid it from their lives before it's too late. There are other characters that will be very important to the plot, including a psychic and a police officer. But can anybody be trusted? Are the couple doomed or will they betray each other to escape a painful death?
You'll have to find out when you read it for yourself! This is a highly unrecognised novel that deserves better and I recommend it strongly if you're looking for a well paced supernatural scare in time for Halloween.
