Wasps In The Ice Cream is a coming of age horror novel set in a small town in the mid 1980s. It's about friendship, growing up, family, and loss but it's also a creepy supernatural tale as well.
Our protagonist is a teenaged boy with a step mother that he's not really close with (even though she's a nice woman and tries really hard), a close group of friends which he begins to separate away from, and those pangs of first love.
When a prank on the town's "weird" girls goes wrong, he finds himself going to their house to apologize for his reluctant role in the prank. Once there, he meets the middle daughter, George, and a strange yet mutual relationship begins to form over the course of the narrative.
A tragic love story at its core, this book touches upon themes we can all relate to. Choosing between friends or lovers, whether to choose popularity over true feelings, and this novel does a fantastic job in exploring these issues while still giving out creepy vibes. Because this family he finds himself involved with are self proclaimed witches and psychics, performing folk magic, rituals, and even seances.
As the town's outcasts, he is torn between where his loyalty will lie. And when he makes his choice, he'll find out just how far some people will go to oppose his choice and how much further others will go to seek revenge.
I really highly recommend this book. It's a great scary coming of age story with heart and a tension filled narrative that will lead to some brutal bloody conclusions.
